Saiento The Valley (Val de Saent) is the first side from the northern slope down to the bottom of curing Adda valley after Tirano. It is a very special valley, for several reasons. First, it is often not a case of duplication toponymic: there is another, of equal name, a short distance, and is the first western side of the Poschiavo Valley, in Switzerland. Then
is a valley of exceptional beauty, few visitors but not desert or desolate, enhanced by the system of three lakes Schiazzera. Finally, and most importantly, has an unusual form, which suggests the shape of the spiral center did Masuccio ideally on top of the mountain, the mountain of Tirano that forms the apex or origin, describes the valley, in fact, a downward spiral, with a sweeping arc of a circle clockwise.
surround it, in fact, the huge valley north of Masuccio, reminiscent of a single volcano, the ridge of the valley gradually becomes the trend south, southwest, west, north-west and north, then bend gradually to the east and form the head of the valley itself, with the three peaks of Mount Campo Schiazzera and to dominate the scenario. Finally, the ridge gradually bends to the south-east and south, returning to the direction oroginaria and gentle, grassy knoll to finish in the Mountain of the Cross.
The spiral is an archetypal figure, that relies, in the symbolism of different cultures and also far away (think, for example, the ascent of Mount Purgatory made by Dante and Virgil), the theme of the path of liberation and elevation to the sky. In fact it says with elevation and return to the origin, that expresses geometrically the dell'epistrophé Neoplatonic principle of return to the source, the wellspring first, the origin of being. In light of this, the Val Saiento represent the most perfect form of an ideal path of elevation, which slopes from the mountainous upstream Lovero climbs up to the top of Masuccio.
Here, then, a valley in the steps of going and inviting to those of thinking.
happy with accents Ivan Fassin, in "The Devil's conglomerate - Alpine Reverie" (The workshop of the Book, Sondrio, 1991) describes suggestions and thoughts that are linked with access to this valley so special: "The approach is, indeed, little pellegrinale: it gets in his car close to a driveway and stone, but not very steep, just below the ridge of Schiazzera. Because in fact the route is from this side of the mountain, and enters the valley spiral to make a full circle to the base of the actual summit. So you climb over the barrier of rocks on a short stretch of paved trail, passing to the plateau, past the ruins of the old barracks Guardia di Finanza, then go up the hill to hill within a limited horizon of mountains outside the barrier, and shaded from the other side of the summit cone.
Almost immediately you can see a big fan of rocks coming down from the top, even above a funnel, which forms a giant hourglass, symbol of inexorable time. In fact, the highest break up the friable rock weathering that slowly crumbles and falls down a narrow channel to enlarge the storage underneath.
On several shelves that make up the bottom of the valley there are also some lakes in the middle of many small cirques.
Later, turning south, it must pass another rocky crag routes to enter the circus top, below the summit. So far, the horizon has never been larger, the journey took place in the valley always twisted, suddenly you pass the bar and the horizon opens onto the Rhaetian and Adamello, enormous.
Along the way you encounter many other "things", not all enumerable here: the chalet Alpe Schiazzera, rudimentary, but not without comfort, the military road that enters the valley coming from the direction of Baruffini , then runs through a strange circuitous path roughly following the contour of 2400 mt. level. On a hill (m. 2425 ca.) Rounded up by the ancient glacier, between the lake and the lake of Pian Fusino Schiazzera, not far from where the military road makes a turn to go on the other side of the valley, a pile stones, an altar almost primordial, you sight the top station in south-east, and watch the play of sunlight that fall and winter to outcry over the cone to the summit.

the top, high on the valley and the circus that surrounded him, forming a large loop, like to think we both talked S. Michael, before falling to rest on the dome of the Basilica Madonna di Tirano. "The reference is to the battle of Tirano Fassin 1620, in which the troops of the Three Leagues Gray, lowered into the Valtellina to quell the rebellion of the Catholic nobles who had been the massacre of the Protestants were defeated and forced to temporarily evict them, thanks, you said very soon, to a miraculous intervention of the head of the heavenly Archangel Michael descended from heaven to give life to the statue on top of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano, and to give the rebels manforte Valtellina.
Moreover, access to this valley offers the opportunity to use the facilities of a mountain hut while contribute to a humanitarian cause. Former barracks of the Guardia di Finanza, also mentioned by the text and placed at the entrance Fassin Alpe Schiazzéra, is now used as a refuge (refuge Alpe Schiazzera) Tirano run by volunteers who adhere to the so-called Operation Mato Grosso " designed to aid the population of an area among the poorest in Brazil. The proceeds of the management of the refuge are, of course, for humanitarian interventions in this area. A good reason to applaud its openness. Add another: it is a point of support is essential for those who would tread the path taken from Tirano in Italy to the heart of Val Grosina.
on top of Cross Mountain, 2279 m.
The presence of a barracks of the Guardia di Finanza is not surprising: the high Val Saiento allows a relatively easy passage to the Valley of Poschiavo (called the door step) and Valle Piana, west side of Val Grosina from which, then, is, again, the easy way, by different routes, the Valley of Poschiavo. This explains the passage of these footpaths on smugglers, and law enforcement efforts made by the Agents.
